Self Reflection: Project 2

I learned a lot making this site, even if some things didn’t go as planed. First of all, I tried using less for the fist time which I really enjoyed. It felt like a more intuitive way to code, however, I did have a some trouble with basic CSS things I usually don’t struggle with. That might not be due to using less or just me not paying attention. Working with and writing jQuery is becoming much easier and actually wasn’t that difficult for this site. The biggest challenge with my jQuery was with the DIY kit. The images didn’t come out quite as I imagined, but the code works well. It took some playing around with to figure out how to make it so only one item per section could be selected at a time, but I was able to do it with some very basic functions. Also, one of my smaller accomplishments was the navicon transformicon, which took much longer to figure out than I expected.

Something that didn’t work out so well was the home/landing page. I wanted the background to zoom out as you scrolled, but I was unable to get this to work without breaking my whole site. As a compromise I added a transition on hover so the background still scales. Other small areas I couldn’t quite get to work was aligning my column in About section, my add to cart button on my Build Your Own Page randomly got wonky and I can’t figure out why, and lastly in my flex slider gallery I couldn’t get margins between the images. Probably simple fixes, but I couldn’t spot them.

As for design I am happy with the very open white space, limited color (relying more on imagery), and type choices. I wanted something open, friendly, and fun and I feel this site captures that. The white(slightly off-white) makes it feel open, but the whimsical images keep it from feeling cold. I feel the design could be stronger and have a few more elements to to push it a little more. Right now it feels very flat and didn’t come out quite as special as I’d hoped.
